Some might just be getting to know her as Zohran Mamdani’s mother, but for many who’ve been following her career for decades, she will always be the one, the only Mira Nair. She’s launched some of the most talented stars, from Irrfan Khan (Salaam Bombay!) to Sarita Choudhury (Mississippi Masala), Indira Varma (Kama Sutra), and Randeep Hooda (Monsoon Wedding). Her stunning frames are a masterclass in color, with composition that even Satyajit Ray would admire. And she has an uncanny ability to turn award-winning novels into unforgettable cinema, from The Namesake to The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

After her son won a historic race, making him the first Asian, South Asian, Indian, and Muslim mayor of New York City, her films have returned to the spotlight.
